Goodbye, old year; hello, new year ...

Michael O'Rourke, a local newspaper columnist, wrote this yesterday in his column. I'd like to share it with you ...

It is that perfect combination of a going-away party and a welcome-aboard party. Just as you say goodbye to one, the other is standing in the doorway ready to be greeted. Hard to believe you did the whole goodbye/hello thing just 365 days ago.

The older you get, the faster the years fly by. That's why the four years you spend in high school tick by so slowly while, by comparison, the four years your children spend in high school pass in the blink of a eye. It is all perspective. In high school, those four years represent one-third of your educational life. When your kids are in high school they may feel the same, but for you, those four years are a much smaller fraction of your time on Earth. The older you get, the smaller the fraction.

... and despite the fact that the years are relatively consistent in length (OK, sure, there is an extra day in there every four years), each year seems to go by faster than the one before. And they show no signs of slowing down.

The pessimist mourns things that went wrong during the previous year; the optimist knows that in the new year, hope springs eternal. The average person is made up of a combination of those feelings.

As the years speed by, New Year's resolutions take on a greater importance as you begin to wonder just how many new years you have left. Like the narrator says near the beginning of Fight Club, "This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time."

So as the ball drops in Time Square tonight, it is time to fill in the following sentence: "2012 is the year that (fill in the blank)." It can be life-altering, affirming, idealistic or simply a goal that will define this smaller fraction of your life in a positive way ...

Like the optimists I have in my life, I am going to go with hope springing eternal in 2012. I will attempt to kick bad habits and be proactive in developing good ones ... The best thing in the near year is that it is new. A clean slate. A blank canvas. Endless possibility. Isn't that really an awesome thing to have?
